Bombardier "to review operations" after contract loss

Share | |

Derby train maker Bombardier has said it will review its UK operations after losing the lucrative Thameslink project to German rival Siemens.

Siemens was named preferred bidder for the estimated £1.4bn deal at the end of last week.

Bombardier has now told reporters that a full review will take place in what it described as "a period of uncertainty".

A spokesman from Bombadier, which employs about 3,000 people in Derby, said: "We have told our staff that we realise that this is a period of uncertainty and we will try to ensure that the review is conducted as soon as we can."

After the Thameslink decision was announced last week, trade unions blasted the government for awarding the contract to an overseas manufacturer and described the move as a "hammer blow" for Bombardier.

As the Thameslink decision was announced last week, transport minister Theresa Villiers said the German-led consortium represented the "best value for money" for taxpayers.
