Rolls-Royce in $2.2bn Brazilian boost

Rolls-Royce has received a production boost with a £2.2bn (£1.36bn) contract win with Brazil-based Tam Airlines. The deal was announced this morning (20 June) as the Derby-based manufacturer also signed a ten-year contract with thermal processing specialist Bodycote.

Rolls-Royce will provide Trent XWB engines for Airbus A350 XWB aircraft powered by the Brazilian airline.

The order includes a 12-year agreement for TotalCare long-term services support.

In its first engione deal with Rolls-Royce, TAM has placed an order for 27 A350 XWBs.

Libano Barroso, president of TAM Airlines, said: "Our selection of this engine and aircraft combination is an integral step in our strategy to increase both our domestic and international route structure, responding to the rapidly developing capacity demands from and to Brazil.

"The operational capability and fuel efficiency of the latest generation in the Trent family will make this aircraft a significant addition to our fleet."

Last week, Rolls-Royce's shipbuilding division signed a deal worth £15m to design and equip two offshore service vessels for South American ship owner Brasil Supply.

Mark King, Rolls-Royce's president of civil aerospace, said: "TAM has placed its trust in our world class technology by selecting the Trent XWB, which is the most fuel efficient large engine ever built. This order is underpinned by a comprehensive TotalCare engine maintainance package, which will help TAM maximise its use of our technology."

More than 1,100 Trent XWB engines have now been sold to 36 customers.

The manufacturer also revealed that it had renewed a ten-year contract with Macclesfield-based Bodycote at the Paris Air Show.

Bodycote's thermal processing equipment improves the properties of metals and alloys, making products stronger and safer.

The new contract will provide support for Rolls-Royce's Precision Casting facility in Derby as well as five additional UK locations.

Bodycote will provide Rolls-Royce with heat treatment, hot isostatic pressing, thermal spray coatings and metal joining, including brazing and electron beam welding.

The agreement also provides the framework for the pair to extend their partnership in other parts of the world, including North America and Asia.
