BT rolls out £2.5bn broadband in Derby
A further 71,000 houses and businesses in Derbyshire are set to receive access to BT's broadband network, it has been revealed.
The Derby and Willowcroft exchanges will be upgraded in the next year as part of the communications giant's £2.5bn roll-out programme, BT said.
Once complete, six out of eight of the city's exchanges will have received the investment.
Graham Bennett, chair of LightSpeed Derby – the campaign to secure superfast broadband for homes and businesses in Derby – said: "This is fantastic news and something that LightSpeed Derby, backed by funding from Emda (East Midlands Development Agency) through Derby City Council's single programme, has been working hard for the past 18 months to secure.
"Derby is the UK's number one high-tech city and justly deserves investment in the latest superfast broadband technology. Now that the two biggest exchanges in the city will be upgraded to deliver superfast broadband, this much needed technology will be available to around 90 per cent of the city’s businesses."
Bennett added that he hoped to see similar investment in Derby’s final two exchanges, Alvaston and Allestree Park, "in the foreseeable future".
