A market hall in Stoke-on-Trent is set to undergo a £50,000 refurbishment programme after securing a grant from the Longton Heritage Project.

Longton Market Hall in The Strand is one of the town’s first historic buildings to benefit from a heritage grant which Stoke-on-Trent City Council said is designed to "restore the area’s architectural gems".

Over the next few weeks the exterior of the building, built in 1863, will be developed with heritage signing, paintwork and shop front improvements.

The project is being funded by English Heritage and the city council, which have entered a joint venture to invest £600,000 in buildings in the city over the next two years.

Ruth Rosenau, Stoke-on-Trent City Council cabinet member for regeneration, said: "Longton has a strong architectural heritage and this project is helping to restore the exterior of some of the town’s most historical buildings.

"The Market Hall is a beautiful Victorian building and the work will help to complement eccentric French renaissance design providing complementary shop front designs and signage. The market is in a prominent part of the town so the improvements will have a real affect on the overall street scene."

The work is costing about £50,000 and will take about eight weeks to complete.
