Wastecycle sweeps up joint venture

Share | |

Wastecycle, the Nottingham-based waste management company, has invested £1m and entered a joint venture with a carpet recycling company.

Following a £1m investment in buildings, machinery and staff training, the company has entered a partnership with Carpet Recycling UK, a not-for-profit members' organisation.

Wastecyle said the venture has enabled it to become one of the UK's only "fully integrated carpet recycling service".

The new scheme aims to reduce the 400,000 tonnes of carpet waste which is buried in UK landfill sites each year.

Wastecycle's national accounts manager, Daniel Shearstone, said: "Carpets have been, and remain, a very difficult commodity to recycle efficiently. Thankfully, our task has been made easier following the recent research into alternatives to the long established, and very wasteful, landfill options.

"Only 2 per cent of carpet waste was recycled in 2007. By 2010, it was 9 per cent and so we have a long way to go to reach our target of 25 per cent by 2015."
