Retail Quarter gets go-ahead

Crest Nicholson's proposals for the final phase of its Park Central development have been given the green light by Birmingham City Council. Plans include a food store and 400 apartments.

Approval was granted for outline planning consent for the developer's Retail Quarter. The scheme will comprise a mixed-use development on the south east corner of the Lee Bank Middleway and Bristol Road intersection.

The proposed scheme includes a 78,500 sq ft food store with several retail and leisure units as well as under croft car parking. More than 400 private and affordable apartments located in a 20-storey tower and six further residential buildings are also planned for construction.

Ian Rhodes, development director for Crest Nicholson Regeneration, said: "The Retail Quarter has been designed to serve both the original and new Park Central community and it has been the long term ambition of residents and the partnership alike for the development to culminate in the delivery of an exciting and landmark final phase.

"The completed Park Central will set a new standard in the UK and firmly put Birmingham on the map for delivering a model of successful urban regeneration."
