Something for the weekend
The filth
With the latest pandemic in full swing, it's time for some businesses to take advantage. A press release from hygiene company Initial shows that only one in three Brits wash their hands after a visit to the toilet. "As E.coli bacteria can spread from person to person by what is known as the 'faecal-oral' route, the transference possibilities of bacteria are immense," warns the terrifying missive.
The results speak for themselves, said Initial: 63 per cent of women and 73 per cent of men in Britain admit that they don't always wash their hands after going to the toilet - only one in three Britons always do. Put another way, if you shake hands with three people today, it is possible that two of those people didn't wash their hands the last time they went to the loo. We're all going to die.
Use your loaf
As preparations for the Nottingham Food and Drink Festival 2011 continue, organisers have announced that three new products have been created in honour of this year's event.
Anmarie Spaziano from Annie's Burger Shack at The Old Angel on Stoney Street has cooked up a treat with the Nottingham Food and Drink Festival Burger, whilst both Castle Rock Brewery, the current holders of the Champion Beer of Britain, and Nottingham Brewery have been busy brewing two Festival beers.
The Festival Burger features locally sourced minced beef and a square sausage slice, topped with generous helpings of mushrooms and HP Sauce, which has its origins in Nottinghamshire. Anmarie is certainly no stranger when it comes to serving up tasty creations, as Annie's Burger Shack was recently named in the top ten places for burgers in the UK in an online countdown by MSN.
But enough about that, and onto the important stuff. The Malt Loaf beer produced by Castle Rock will be available at venues including Keans Head (around the corner from the Insider office, luckily), The Canalhouse, The Vat & Fiddle and Bread and Bitter, whose logo inspired the beer's pump clip. The 4.5 per cent dark traditional bitter is described as having a "well-rounded full flavour with some residual sweetness and a balanced hop taste." All excellent news.
Speed freak
For some people, boyhood dreams are closer than for others. Take Graham Mulholland of epm: technology, for example, the speed freak who, tonight, will get as close to one of his heroes as he possibly can. Graham will introduce a screening of new documentary Senna, the biopic of the late legendary Formula One driver.
He's also asked colleagues in the industry for their stories about Senna, and promises one or two fascinating anecdotes about one of Formula one’s golden periods.
"Everybody involved in F1 can remember where they were when Senna died," confirms Graham. "He was a hero and an inspiration, and I’m delighted to be able to talk about him before motorsport fans in Derby."
The screeing will take place tonight at Derby Quad cinema at 6.15pm.
