College to pioneer start-up programme
Derby College has been picked to pilot a qualification aimed at supporting potential entrepreneurs.
The Qualifying with a Business (QwaB) programme, which will launch this autumn, has been devised by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).
The college has teamed up with Derby-based business start-up expert Ken Horn to design the series of short courses which lead to the QwaB qualification.
Derby College will base the new programme in its Quantum Centre at Rolls-Royce in Victory Road.
Lessons on the course will include marketing, hiring staff and business and financial planning.
Ken Horn, who has helped more than 4,000 businesses set up, said: "With the changes to the support provided to entrepreneurs by organisations previously financed by central government, there is a real need in the local and regional economy for this kind of support for people looking to set up their own businesses.
"The short courses will be very much geared towards the individuals set in the framework of the new nationally recognised QwaB qualification and will give them the wide ranging skills needed to succeed in this challenging climate."
The programme launch will take place at The Roundhouse, Derby on 21 June.
