Salad jobs at risk after Asda loss

More than 100 jobs are at risk at a subsidiary of Spalding-based Bakkavor after it lost a crucial supply contract with Asda.

English Village Salads, which is owned by the Lincolnshire food company, has commenced a 90-day consultation with staff to reorganise its packing operations and propose redundancies.

Following a strategic review, Asda has elected to move more of its salads procurement to their in-house operation, IPL.

EVS said Asda's move will have a "significant effect" on the volume of its business.

As part of the consultation process, the business said it will be consulting with all of the hourly paid staff at both its North Yorkshire sites. Of the 203 employees at risk, it is estimated that there could be up to 84 hourly paid redundancies. Of the 68 salaried staff, 47 employees are at risk with 23 proposed redundancies.

Bakkavor said it was liaising closely with employee representatives and the union on the consultation.
