University to relocate within Eastside
Plans finalising a revised location for the new Birmingham City University campus are set to go before the city council on Monday (6 June).
Under the agreement between the Birmingham City Council, Advantage West Midlands (AWM) and the university, the campus originally intended for Bartholomew Street will now be developed at the junction of Curzon Street/Cardigan Street.
The location of the campus was changed due to the government’s proposals for the high speed rail link (HS2) between Birmingham and London, and implications for Eastside, said the council.
The agreement will mean that the council, AWM, university and joint venture partner Goodman will provide the land for the new campus.
Professor David Tidmarsh, vice chancellor at Birmingham City University, said: "I’m delighted that, after more than 12 months of delay following the announcement of the high speed train proposals for Birmingham, the university can proceed with its planned City Centre Campus development.
"To have reached this crucial point has taken a lot of negotiation and hard work by all the parties involved.
"As a result of this partnership we can now look to realising our vision for a city centre campus on Eastside. This development is key to the delivery of a world-class learning quarter in the centre of Birmingham, which will itself be a catalyst for economic growth and regeneration."
