Town centre overhaul planned for Telford

Telford town centre could be home to a new multiple retail store and cinema complex after the area's owner said it was reviewing its current retail and leisure operations.

Hark AREA said it is undertaking a strategic review of its options in the town centre, which was driven by the government’s announcement of a review of the future of the high street.

Hark said it was "encouraged" by the previous council’s decision to incorporate the changes to the Central Telford Area Action Plan (CTAAP) and "the change in attitude displayed by the new Telford and Wrekin Council administration towards private investors".

The company said it is currently undergoing "accelerating" discussions with leading cinema operators for a multiplex cinema and restaurant complex. It has also undertaken a review to enhance the scope for retail and active frontages on Central Southwater.

A multiple retail store within the box road boundary has also been proposed.

A spokesman for Hark said: "Recent positive developments at both a national and local level have prompted us to consider how best to continue the successful growth of Telford town centre. It is right therefore that we re-examine our current retail and leisure offer in the town centre and we are excited to announce that this is likely to include a new multiplex cinema and restaurant complex.

"As the preliminary image shows, this is a striking new development which marks the next phase in our plans to regenerate the town centre. We welcome the clear statement from the new council administration to work forward with us to achieve this vision together."
