Something for the weekend
Higgs event scores for charity
Black Country law firm Higgs & Sons brought together 200 professionals from across the region to play in its annual football tournament, which raises money for worthy causes each year.
The Victoria Ground, home of Bromsgrove Sporting FC, hosted the event which saw 24 teams of local professionals and clients play 67 games of six-a-side football.
In total £2,600 was raised for the charity Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer. The tournament was eventually won by accountancy firm Baldwins, which beat Alto-Digital on penalties in a closely fought final.
Senior partner Ian Shovlin said the event was the most successful that the firm had ever run. To help the teams recover, Higgs laid on a hog roast and served ice-cream from a specially sourced van which played the Match of the Day theme tune.
Harriers and college in hospitality push
Stourbridge College and Kidderminster Harriers Football Club have teamed up to create partnership academies with the ultimate goal of getting young people trained and qualified for work in the sports and hospitality industries.
The new football and hospitality academies will offer training opportunities for 16 year olds (and upwards) that will serve them well in the hospitality industry and help them reach the top of their game in the competitive world of football.
Lynette Cutting, principal at Stourbridge College, said: “We will be recruiting apprentices for our hospitality academy and looking for top class footballers to join the football academy - all of whom will be supported through a variety of courses to help them prepare for careers in sport or catering.”
