Evida Power drives £70m venture

A Coventry-based US battery-pack firm has been selected to develop electric vehicle technology under a new £70m partnership.

Evida Power, which planted its UK base in the Midlands this year, will work on the volume production of wireless battery-charging technology. The company will complete the project alongside London-based HaloIPT, which specialises in wireless electric vehicle charging.

The two firms will work together over five years to establish wire-free induction power transfer systems as a viable long-term option for a forthcoming electric car. The project will see whether it is possible to make 40,000 of the units during the period.

Evida’s co-founder and vice president of business development, Jonathan Shine, said: "We are delighted to be collaborating with a world-renowned pioneer of revolutionary wireless charging systems.

"This will not only enable the sharing of complementary expertise, but will provide our business with a significant opportunity to extend our current product offering beyond the supply and integration of battery packs, and supply the very latest wireless technology to our client base."

With estimates suggesting electric car sales will have reached 70,000 units by 2015, UK Trade & Investment said the deal could attract "a far wider" level of global investment.
