The Midlands Art Centre (MAC) in Birmingham has been crowned 'Project of the Year' at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors' (RICS) West Midlands awards ceremony.

The £15m expansion and refurbishment of the MAC also secured the 'Community Benefit' award.

Created in the 1960s, the MAC is home to South Asian arts agency Sampad.

Now in their 21st year, the RICS awards recognise West Midlands developments in four award categories – building conservation, community benefit, regeneration and sustainability.

The RICS judges said of the MAC: "This expansion and updating of the existing MAC building, as well as the new build additions, have been hugely successful.

"The centre has been very well received by the large numbers of visitors and artists who use the site and it is well linked to the local community."
