Dairy Crest axes 90 Midlands jobs

Dairy Crest has announced plans to close a site in Shropshire, with the loss of 90 jobs. Production of its Clover dairy spread will move to its Merseyside plant.

The manufacture of the spread is currently split between Kirkby in Merseyside and Crudgington in Shropshire, but the company wants to consolidate the production to one site.

The decision means that there will be approximately 90 redundancies at Crudgington but 45 new roles created at Kirkby. It is expected that it will take about 12 months to plan and implement these changes.

Richard Jones, supply chain director of Dairy Crest’s foods division said: "The decision to transfer production has not been taken lightly. This is part of an extensive operational review during which various options have been considered to continue to improve efficiencies across the business.

"This will help to provide good value to our consumers. We are always reluctant to let employees go, and we will do all we can to lessen the impact of redundancy by helping them to find alternative employment. In addition we are pleased to be able to create additional jobs at our Kirkby site."

Dairy Crest’s innovation centre, which is also based at its Crudgington site, will not be affected by the transfer of Clover.
