BAM Construction Midlands has been awarded a £45m contract to carry out the second phase of Aston University's student accommodation redevelopment.

Balsall Common-based BAM Construction said the contract win has safeguarded its existing workforce and will enable it to create new jobs.

The £215m Aston Student Villages Scheme (ASV) – which involved the demolition of two high-rise tower blocks earlier this month – will comprise accommodation for more than 3,000 students in the city.

Replacing the high-rise blocks will be two units of accommodation of between four and 18 storeys. They will provide 1,053 en-suite student bedrooms and shared facilities.

Two residential blocks, providing 1,300 en-suite rooms, were constructed by Carillion as part of the first phase of the development.

Richard Dakin, director of BAM in the Midlands, said: "We will bring to this project BAM’s high standard of construction, collaborative working and community engagement. It is very exciting for us to be building something to enhance the life of this city’s students and doing this for such an important client as Aston University."

The ASV scheme is one of the biggest regeneration projects currently underway in the Midlands, and is scheduled for completion in 2013.
