Leicester College has bought the Welford Road Community Centre for £1.32m. The property was sold by East Midlands property agent Innes England on behalf of the charity Action for Deafness.

The building is located next to the college’s Freemen’s Park Campus. The centre comprises a theatre, sports and social club facilities. It also includes a chapel of worship and car park with more than 40 spaces.

Areas of the building have already been converted into classroom facilities with further work planned to develop the rest of the site.

Steve Scott, of Innes England’s Leicester office, said: "Despite market conditions there was considerable interest shown for the site, in particular from community organisations.

"However the centre was the ideal solution to and, indeed, in, the perfect location for Leicester College’s need for further teaching facilities. This investment helps to reinforce its commitment to enriching the lives of, and creating new opportunities for, all members of its diverse community."

Action Deafness has now moved its head office to The Peepul Centre in Leicester.
