The Meteor Centre in Derby has been given the green light for a 100,000 sq ft food store. The redevelopment is set to create about 400 jobs, said owner Land Securities, which received planning permission from the city council.

The approved plans are for a new supermarket, petrol station, car wash and the refurbishment of existing units.

Land Securities, portfolio manager for the Meteor Jack Busby site, said: "This is great news for the residents of Derby, the future of the park and the local economy. In this challenging economic climate this is very positive as it will not only help create hundreds of full time and part time jobs but it will also bring forward investment in a property that is in need of reinvigoration.

"This will allow us to provide a much better shopping environment with facilities that meet modern retail requirements. So we’re pleased to take plans forward following a robust submission. We’re already in talks with various retailers to take the space."

The Meteor Centre comprises more than 182,000 sq ft with 14 retail units and a fast food restaurant. Retailers in the centre include Focus, Carpetright, DFS, D&M Furniture, Topps Tiles, Staples and Pets at Home.
