RGF snub leaves railway station project off-track

The developer behind the development of Kenilworth Railway Station has withdrawn from the scheme. Warwickshire County Council and developer John Laing said they had "reviewed their relationship" regarding the project after failing to secure funding through the government's Regional Growth Fund (RGF).

John Laing was appointed by the county council as joint promoter and funder of Kenilworth Railway Station in 2009.

The scheme had been awarded planning permission but failed twice in its bid to secure funding. It was not eligible to apply for funding under the department for transport major scheme bid funding route, as it closed to new entrants in October 2010. Last month, the partnership was told it had failed in its bid to receive funding from the RGF cash pot.

The council said after exploring other potential sources of funding, it had "reviewed its relationship" with London-based John Laing.

Councillor Alan Cockburn, the county council’s portfolio holder for environment and economy, said: "We are grateful to John Laing for continuing to support the development of the scheme beyond the original programme to enable us to seek alternative funding for the project.

"The scheme remains a priority for the county council and the people of Kenilworth and we will pursue every opportunity to deliver it."
