The chief executive of a Midlands enterprise development company has welcomed the introduction of the government's leadership and management development grant. Stephen Smith, from EMB, said the grant scheme was a "great opportunity" for Midlands business leaders to grow their companies.

The funding programme was unveiled by skills minister John Hayes earlier this week.

Smith said: "The leadership and management development grant scheme is a great opportunity for senior leaders of locally based small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). It will enable them to take advantage of funding that will support leadership and management training to help them grow their businesses."

A match funded grant of up to £1,000 is available to be spent on leadership training and coaching to grow the business and improve productivity.

About 13,000 small and medium sized businesses and social enterprises which demonstrate a potential for growth could benefit from the development grant, said Hayes.
