John Lewis has confirmed it will open a store in Tamworth, creating about 200 new jobs. Construction on the ‘at home’ retail unit is due to start next week.

The retailer’s ‘at home’ format focuses on furniture, furnishing accessories, electrical and home technology.

The 42,000 sq ft single storey shop will be located on the Ventura Retail Park.

Andy Street, managing director of John Lewis, said: “The opening of John Lewis at home Tamworth shows our determination to become more convenient for shoppers in the West Midlands. The Tamworth shop will complement our existing full line department store in Solihull and our flagship shop due to open in Birmingham in 2014. Together these shops will transform our presence in the West Midlands.”

The store will open in autumn 2011.

Last week Andy Street was appointed as chair of the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), which also covers the Tamworth area.

He said: “In my new role it is also very heartening to see John Lewis play its part in private sector job creation in the region.”

The shop has been leased from the Aucott Group. John Lewis was represented by Cushman & Wakefield and Ashworths Chartered Surveyors.
