Carillion has appointed Philip Green as non-executive. Green joins the Wolverhampton-based construction company from water group United Utilities.

He will officially take up his new role on 1 June.

Green’s most recent position was chief executive of United Utilities, the UK's largest listed water business.

He has also served as chief executive of Royal P&O Nedlloyd, director at Reuters and as chief operating officer at DHL for Europe and Africa.

On joining the Carillion Board, he will also serve as the senior independent non-executive director.

David Garman, who has been a non-executive director of the company since 2004, will be stepping down from the board at the company's annual general meeting on 4 May 2011.

Carillion chairman, Philip Rogerson, said: "We are delighted that Philip Green will be joining the board, where his considerable experience as a business leader in the services industry will enable him to make a valuable contribution to the future development of Carillion.

"David Garman steps down from the board with our grateful thanks for the substantial contribution he has made over the past six years to Carillion's development and success."
