Something for the weekend

The trench of defeat

If, like us, you’re a bit tired of seeing Tony Robinson every time you turn on the telly digging a hole and finding nothing, then spare a thought for the owners of the Normanton Inn at the Clumber Park Hotel & Spa, which recently had its re-opening somewhat hijacked by the Labour-supporting ex-sitcom star.

Channel 4’s The Time Team, and Tony Robinson, who had been staying at the hotel whilst filming in nearby Clipstone.

“Our launch evening was a success, and it was great to have The Time Team and Tony Robinson around as well,” said Edward Mobbs, sales & marketing Manager of the hotel. “Everyone fondly remembers Baldrick, and there is also the link to Sherwood Forest when he wrote and starred in Maid Marian and her Merry Men, so for us the timing could not have been better!” he added, clutching at the nearest straw available.

Through the roof

They say you can get a degree in just about anything these days, but roofing? You’re kidding us, right? Well, yeah, not quite.

Businesses, colleges and young people in Notts were invited to an open day at the only college dedicated to roofing skills in the East Midlands this week.

The Bulwell-based East Midlands Roofing College (EMRC), which opened in January, threw its doors open on Wednesday to show off its new facilities to everyone.

The college, the brainchild of Jason Wright – managing director of J Wright Roofing – is already training 11 apprentice recruits and, in May, will welcome another dozen young people ready to learn roofing skills.

The college’s Livia Williams said: “We are holding this open day to show the local community, colleges and roofing companies all the facilities we have here.”

Jason Wright came up with the idea for the college because he was so frustrated that his own young apprentices had to travel miles to a Birmingham roofing college. Roof wars!

Top to bottom

Finally, good luck to Andy Cameron-Smith of RBS who has decided to run 874 miles and row 1.407 metres - the equivalent of Lands' End to John O'Groats and back again. Mad he may be, but any money raised will pay for equipment and extra curricular activities for his son’s school. Anyone interested in sponsoring Andy should contact us here at Insider and we’ll put you in touch.
