Derby arena given go-ahead
Plans to build a 4,000-seat arena in Derby’s Pride Park have been given the green light by councillors. The building, which includes a velodrome, will put Derby on “the cultural and sporting map”, said Derby City Council cabinet members.
The development is the first of two potential sporting hubs in the city under Derby’s £50m leisure scheme. The other building would be anchored around a 50 metre swimming pool. It is thought that either Riverlights or the former Derbyshire Royal Infirmary site in London Road will be named as the preferred location.
Conservative group leader Harvey Jennings said: "This is much more than just a velodrome.
"It will be a major multi-use arena and the fact a velodrome will be in it is a bonus and it will be only one of four in the country."
Building is expected to start in 2012 to coincide with the Olympics.
