LG Arena breaks attendance record
Birmingham’s LG Arena has broken its attendance record twice in the last month. The NEC-owned site said that shows by Irish rockers The Script and pop star Katy Perry drew in its largest ever crowds.
The arena said 15,364 fans attended a performance of Irish rockers The Script on 17 March, breaking its record of 15,000 fans. US pop star Katy Perry also broke the previous record as a crowd of 15,199 showed up to see her perform.
Capacity at the venue can range from 5,389 to a potential 15,700 depending on the stage design and seating arrangement. The highest recorded attendance at the LG Arena was previously held by Lady Gaga who attracted 14,920 fans in 2010.
Guy Dunstan, general manager of arenas at The NEC Group, said: “With shows like X Factor Live, Katy Perry and Peter Kay touring during 2011 we expected it to be a big year, but to have broken our attendance record twice in the first quarter is exceptional. This clearly demonstrates that despite the recession the appetite for live music is as strong as ever.”
