Bmibaby halts Manchester and Cardiff flights

Budget airline Bmibaby has confirmed it will axe its services from Manchester and Cardiff airports at the end of the summer. The Castle Donington-based company said it needed to focus on its main markets “in the current economic climate.”

The airline has two aircraft based at Manchester and these will be moved to Belfast City Airport and East Midlands. A total of 64 of the 97 staff affected in the North West will be offered the chance to relocate to other bases. Sixty-nine of the company’s Cardiff staff will also be offered a relocation, said the company.

In a statement, Bmibaby said: “In the current economic climate it is essential for bmibaby to focus on airports where the airline already has a strong market presence and where there are strong growth opportunities for the Bmibaby business.

”Bmibaby will therefore cease operations from Manchester Airport and from Cardiff Airport from the end of the summer 2011 flying schedule.”

The company said it had now entered into a 30-day consultation period with unions.
