Unemployment figures rise in East Midlands

The region’s unemployment figures are “better than expected”. That’s the view of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, despite the fact that unemployment rose in both counties.

The number of Jobseeker's Allowance claimants dropped in Derby but the county of Derbyshire received 232 more applications for Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) than in February.

In Nottinghamshire, 132 more JSA claimants were registered when compared to February’s figures.

George Cowcher, chief executive of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “These figures are not as bad as anticipated. It was expected that the number of claimants would increase more strongly as a result of the number of people in the public sector losing their jobs because of the spending cuts.

“The figures demonstrate the robustness of the private sector in creating new jobs and this is particularly marked in Derby city where the claimant count has fallen.”

Nationally, unemployment dropped by 17,000 to 2.48 million.
