BAE Systems announces jobs axe
Seventy jobs are set to go at BAE Systems’ Wolverhampton site. The company said it is preparing to axe about 230 roles across the country as restructuring plans to move its vehicle support services to its Telford site were revealed.
The defence giant has now begun a consultation on the proposed closure of its manufacturing site in Wolverhampton as it begins the process of moving its operations.
Jan Söderström, managing director for BAE Systems’ vehicles business said the company had to cut costs to remain competitive, and that it regretted the impact on employees.
Bill Green, regional officer for UNITE, said that the announcement was not a surprise, but that workers would fight for their jobs. He said: “We are discussing this issue with the company to see if they are able to bring work in from elsewhere in the UK or across the globe. So far we have not been successful but members are not yet accepting any potential closure.”
BAE said it is set to cut further jobs in Newcastle and Farnborough.
