Michelin-star chef Glynn Purnell has said his Edgbaston restaurant The Asquith “will be back” after being forced to close its doors following six months of trading. However, Purnell said he was now in advanced negotiations regarding a new location in Birmingham city centre.

Purnell said he was forced to close The Asquith following “ongoing issues with the landlord”.

He said: “The Asquith will be back – and I am now in advanced negotiation regarding a great location in Birmingham city centre, in the heart of the business district. I am committed to the concept of The Asquith, taking young and local talent and giving them the opportunity to excel.

“Despite the property problems, the team at The Asquith in Edgbaston proved they can do it and the prospect of a new restaurant, in the city centre, is proving really exciting.”

The Asquith in Edgbaston, which had 34 covers, closed its doors earlier this week.

However, Purnell said the new location would be “a showcase for young Birmingham talent”.

He said: “The service and food will be of the highest quality and there will be the option to drop in for a glass of wine with a plate of traditional cheeses or enjoy a full three course meal. We expect it to appeal to business people, those on shopping trips, locals and visitors alike.

“The team – which I intend to increase and which will be led by head chef Jason Eaves and restaurant manager Julie Tonsgaard – is looking forward to concentrating on service and food, and not worrying about the property.”

The chef has a second restaurant, Purnell’s in Cornwall Street, which he said remains open and unaffected.
