Lift-off for Family Business Awards

This year’s Midlands Family Business Awards have been launched at the Hotel du Vin in Birmingham.

Charlotte Prow, managing director of Nottingham insurance broker The Wilson Organisation - which underwrites the awards - said the organisers hope to double the 130 entries received last year this time out.

“This project has exceeded all that we hoped for and this year we are sure we can do more,” she said. The awards were launched last year. Insider is the media partner for the awards for the second consecutive year.

Jeremy Cope, partner in charge of Smith Cooper’s Birmingham office, said: “Family business can be described as the backbone of the economy. Forty per cent of our client base is made up of family businesses.”

There are ten categories in the awards this year including, for the first time, awards for service excellence, rural family business and small family business. These and the overall Midlands Family Business of the Year award will be announced at a gala evening in Birmingham on 17 November.

The awards, which are free to enter, open on 3 May and close on 30 June. Applications can be completed online here.

The award sponsors this year are Smith Cooper, along with Aviva, Barclays, Roythornes, Positive Outcomes, PwC, Key Personnel and Unum.

The awards will once again run as a charitable, not-for-profit initiative, with The Children's Society, The Willow Foundation and The Venture Foundation named as beneficiaries for the second year.
