The first British Taco Bell cafés have been fitted out by Nottinghamshire-based Jephsons Shopfitters. Taco Bell, which serves Mexican fast food, has 5,600 restaurants in the US.

The first cafés have opened at the Lakeside Shopping Centre and the Eastgate Shopping Centre, both in in Essex. Mansfield-based Jephsons Shopfitters, which carried out the fit-outs, said it hopes to be involved with further Taco Bell projects.

Nigel Schofield, operations director at Jephsons Shopfitters, said: "Taco Bell is new to the UK and we are really excited about working with yet another global brand in the food retail and catering sectors. The company has very positive plans for market expansion in the UK and we look forward to working with them and fitting out more cafes come on line, allowing more people to sample the great Mexican food it serves.

"We believe our strong track record of working in the food retail and restaurant sectors in the UK, with some of the biggest brand names on the high street, was behind the reason Taco Bell chose Jephsons Shopfitters for the two projects.

"We are looking forward to working with the company again in the future as more stores are opened."

Taco Bell was founded in 1962 by Glen Bell, a former US Marine, who invented the preformed taco shell in 1951. The first ever Taco Bell restaurant was opened in Downey, California.
