Proposals submitted for 'superstore' development

A planning application for a 100,000 sq ft food store has been lodged with East Staffordshire Borough Council. The outline application details plans for the build of a store to redevelop land at the Burton Rugby Club and Blockbuster video retail site.

The proposals have been submitted by Birmingham-based property developer DPM on behalf of Burton Rugby Club, HPN - owner of the Blockbuster site, and Peelcroft Burton.

Plans include the creation of a 100,000 sq ft foodstore with 500 car parking spaces.

Paul Tolley, director of DPM, said: “It is accepted that there is a need for a new food superstore in Burton. The rugby club is in the town centre, and is allocated for retail uses in the town centre masterplan. It is in an ideal location being adjacent to the Octagon shopping mall and close to the town centre car parks. A new store could open in 2013.”

Colin Grimsdell, Burton Rugby Club’s development chairman, said that selling the club’s current location at Peel Croft for food retail was “an essential part of the equation”. The club has recently received permission to build new rugby club facilities at Branston Bridge.

A public consultation on the proposed scheme will be held in the near future, said the developer.
