Handelsbanken opens Birmingham HQ

Handelsbanken is continuing its UK expansion by opening a regional bank in Birmingham. The bank, which is Sweden’s oldest listed company, also said it would invest in new branches throughout the Midlands.

The bank already has two regional banks in London and Manchester covering the North and South of the country.

The office will be responsible for the Midlands area and will initially cover some 24 branches. The bank said it had plans to open further new branches in ‘suitable towns’ in the region.

The regional head office will be located in Two Colmore Square which is owned by Nurton Developments. Handelsbanken is the second occupier to take office space there and was advised by Jon Carmalt of King Sturge. Nurton were advised by CBRE’s Will Bentham.

Carmalt said: "It is a great boost to Birmingham and the Midlands economy that Handelsbanken is further investing in the area by opening its new regional head office in the Colmore Business District, the commercial heart of the city."

Goran Stille has been appointed head of the regional bank which will have a staff of 25 including credit analysts, personnel and finance functions.
