A new package of improvements to Swadlincote has been unveiled by South Derbyshire District Council. It comes after funders and staff from the council met to mark the completion of the second phase of the 'Swadlincote Masterplan'.

The Delph, West Street and Ernest Hall Way have had more than £2m of investment over the last two years, including redefined streets and an enlarged market place.

Councillor Bob Wheeler, leader of South Derbyshire District Council, said: "We are extremely proud of the improvements that have been made in Swadlincote.

“This high level of external funding secured by the council is supporting our existing businesses, improving the ambience and character of the town centre and attracting more private investment.

"It demonstrates our determination to make Swadlincote an even better place to live, work and visit for generations to come."

The Delph has seen new Yorkstone paving, improved lighting, new seating and additional tree planting.

Work to enhance West Street has included Staffordshire blue clay pavers and granite kerbs and blocks being installed to repave the gateway. Grants have also been made available to improve shop fronts, while a facelift at Sharpe’s Pottery Museum is ongoing, said the cuncil.

A footpath put in place on Ernest Hall Way is also providing a link to the new Hepworth Retail Park - where a new cinema, shops and restaurants are under construction – and the Morrison’s supermarket.

Frank McArdle, chief executive of South Derbyshire District Council, said: “The council is delighted with the quality of work carried out.

“Our professional officers have done a magnificent job to recognise the town’s proud history and heritage while ensuring it looks fresh and contemporary.

“It means we have been able to strengthen the qualities that make Swadlincote special and develop the town’s growing reputation as a key visitor destination in The National Forest.

“We will continue to look for funding opportunities that will enable us to build on the high profile developments currently taking place.”
