Representatives from the rail industry will meet with students from across the East Midlands to discuss the 'sustainable skills' developments on offer for young people in the rail industry at this year’s Innovation Rail (iRail). The event will take place at The Roundhouse in Derby.

The event has been organised by Transport iNet with the Derby and Derbyshire Rail Forum (DDRF) and Derby Railway Engineering Society (DRES), and supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

It is the second iRail event to be held in the city, and aims to give young people and industry professionals the chance to network, with discussions led by Network Rail and Young Railway Professionals.

Students from 12 East Midlands schools will participate in the iRail 2011 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) challenge. The grouos will then get the opportunity to present their answers to two engineering challenges in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style event.

Among the panellists will be music mogul and rail enthusiast Pete Waterman.

John Frodsham, director of the Transport iNet, said: “iRail is fast becoming an important annual fixture in the educational and industry calendar. Rail is a sustainable transport option for the future and we want to encourage the best and brightest engineers to consider rail as an exciting and interesting career choice.”

The event takes place on 17 March.
