Chamber calls on government to increase business confidence

Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce said it will challenge the government to increase business confidence in the upcoming Budget, and introduce what it calls “radical policies” to support the expansion of the private sector.

In a statement, the chamber said that government’s announcements to date have “not been matched by the significant policy and cultural overhaul needed to deliver increased business confidence and enterprise growth”.

Chamber research earlier this year found that local companies were unhappy with the government’s efforts to promote growth, with 40 per cent of local businesses ranking the progress to date as either poor or very poor. A further 47 per cent of companies said the same about its efforts to reduce red tape and business burdens.

George Cowcher, chief executive of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire chamber, said: “Government has not yet matched its promises to promote business growth with any real action to create a strong and stable environment for the private sector to flourish and deliver the economic growth needed to secure and sustain the recovery.”
