Academy launches with engineering event
Warwickshire College’s Power Industry Academy is set to launch to industry next month with a ‘Powering the Future’ business conference. The academy is part of the £33m Rugby centre development and was funded with a £6.2m investment from Advantage West Midlands (AWM).
The business conference will take place at the academy on 18 March.
The Power Industry Academy was established to train future engineers in power generation manufacture. It is closely linked to industry leaders Alstom, Converteam, Doosan Babcock and Quartzelec.
The conference is set to provide information on understanding the needs of the power industry. Delegates will have the chance to hear from industry representatives including David Edwards, chief executive of the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB), Steve Davis, chief executive of the National Skills Academy for Power, and representatives from local power companies, Alstom Power and Converteam.
David Edwards, chief executive of the ECITB said: “Skills development is essential to the future of the UK’s engineering construction industry, which builds and maintains vital infrastructure from power stations and wind farms, to nuclear and off-shore oil and gas. The Midlands has the potential to lead the way in helping the country to meet its 20-20-20 climate change targets, as well as providing for the energy needs of the future.”
