Carillion digs into academy deal
Construction giant Carillion has agreed a deal worth £16.3m to build a second academy in Southampton. The Wolverhampton-based company said the school will open in September 2012.
Construction has now started at the Oasis Academy Lord’s Hill site and follows Carillion’s deal with Southampton City Council last year to build Oasis Academy Mayfield, worth £15m.
Work began on the first academy in October. Both buildings are due for completion in September next year.
Rob Holt, Carillion managing director for education, said: “We are delighted to be working with Southampton City Council to deliver the new Oasis Academy Lord`s Hill, which will provide superb education facilities for the local community for years to come. What is particularly pleasing is the opportunity to contribute to Southampton City Council's local training and apprenticeship agenda.”
As part of the academies programme, Carillion will create 12 apprenticeships, 20 weeks of work experience for 16-year-olds and 20 weeks of work placement opportunities for adults and young people.
