Mixed bag of growing business in the Midlands
The Midlands economy is becoming an increasingly mixed bag, according to the Midlands Business Insider’s Growth 100 report. The top ten growing companies from across the region included three from the food sector, alongside businesses in the ICT, sports, clothes retail and manufacturing games. The report chronicles the region’s fastest growing companies based on five-year turnover figures.
Missing out on the top spot by one place is Stoke City Football Club, which recently consolidated its position in the premier League. The club experienced average annual turnover growth of 143.5 per cent, with a turnover of £53.5m.
The club was pipped to the post by Chesterfield Poultry, which grew by an average 175.8 per cent over the five-year period.
Amongst the three food sector entrants in the top ten is Earl of Plymouth Estates, based in Hereford, which enters the list at number four. Through the associated Ludlow Food Centre, in which directors invested £2m, farming, food production and retail are combined to create a premium branded food and farm shop.
Marketing manager, Tom Hunt, said: “Having been open for less than four years, the centre has grown organically and is hoping to continue by adapting and enlarging its offering. The estate is creating a 13-acre site opposite the centre with walks, pond, livestock and a picnic area which is scheduled to open in the spring.”
Telford-based Entanet International, which provides voice and data connectivity services, makes it to number five on the list. The company had average annual turnover growth of more than 73 per cent.
Proband, the computer products supplier based in Birmingham, appears in the top ten for the second year running. The company reached number six, with an average annual turnover growth of 71.7 per cent.
The Growth 100 chart features companies from the East and West Midlands; in this year’s table, more than half the businesses featured are based in the west.
Other West Midlands companies appearing on the list include Focus Pharmaceuticals at number 37, Bullock Construction at 46 and retail giant Poundland at number 87.
