Green light for £57m housing budget
A budget of £57.8m has been approved by Birmingham City Council for investment in council properties this year.
Plans for the homes include structural improvements to a number of tower blocks and properties across the city.
Since 2004, the council has invested in excess of £700m in council housing.
Councillor John Lines, cabinet member for housing at Birmingham Council, said: "I am delighted once again to honour the commitment made to tenants in 2004 to improve their homes as part of our services as a retained landlord.
"This continued investment in council homes had transformed our tenants’ homes and improved their lives. In 2004, a majority of tenants had no central heating at all and improvements like these have given them a better quality of life. Better homes mean healthier communities; this fact has been recognised as a huge contribution to public health in Birmingham.
“This year’s substantial investment will see the continuation of our kitchen and bathroom programme as part of decent homes plus."
The report will also recommend awarding the works to the council’s construction partnering contractors, Wates Group, G F Tomlinson Building, Thomas Vale Construction and repairs service providers.
