Northumbrian Water in £120m flood drive
Durham-based Northumbrian Water is investing more than £120m to reduce the risk of flooding.
The work, which will be spread out over five years, aims to tackle the problems caused by some inadequate sewers in the water infrastructure.
The first phase of the scheme will begin on Monday (14 February) with a £300,000 project to tackle the problem in Haltwhistle, Northumberland.
The work is expected to take three months and will involve increasing the size of a total of 135 metres of sewer pipe, reducing the flooding risk to nearby properties on Park Avenue and Park Road.
Danny Coyne, Northumbrian Water’s project manager for the scheme, said: “We appreciate the distress that flooding causes customers. Over the next five years we intend to invest more than £120m to reduce this risk.”
