Social enterprise centre proposed for Danesholme library
A proposal submitted to by the University of Northampton could lead to the Danesholme library building in Corby remaining open, despite proposals to close it on 31 March following council cutbacks.
The library is at risk of closure as part of Northamptonshire County Council's budget review proposals, but the university has submitted a proposal to the council to launch a ‘social entrepreneur in residence’ at the library.
Simon Denny, social enterprise development director at the University of Northampton, said that the idea might mean “an independently run library, funded by a café”.
He added that other ideas being considered included a job club, a computer learning centre, a social enterprise business start-up site, or a play area for children.
Denny said: “Social enterprise is all about developing self-funding and sustainable business activities that the community wants. In the case of the Danesholme library building, we will be consulting with the local community, borough councillors and other representatives as to what they want in the building that will meet Corby’s needs.”
