University to honour architect and engineer

The University of Leicester will award honorary degrees to an optical engineer and architect from the city. Ray Fairband, who has worked with the university’s Space Research Centre, and Michael Wilford, who has worked on the United Nations building, will both receive the honours at the De Montfort Hall, Leicester.

Since the mid 1990s, Fairband has worked alongside the University of Leicester Space Research Centre (SRC), developing optics and detectors for Leicester’s space missions.

Michael Wilford’s company, Michael Wilford Architects, has worked on the design of buildings including central and local government, new town corporations and the United Nations.

Vice-chancellor of the university, Professor Sir Robert Burgess, said: "It gives us great pleasure to honour two people who have each contributed to the university through their expertise. Graduation is a time when all of us can celebrate success across the university, and it is fitting that we do this in the presence of two people who have contributed so much in their own, very different fields."
