Birmingham City University will bestow an honorary doctoral degree on entrepreneur and philanthropist John Caudwell.

Caudwell is the founder of Staffordshire's Phones4u, but it is his work as founder and chairman of Caudwell Children for which he is being recognised.

Caudwell Children was established in 2000 and provides specialist equipment, treatment and therapy for unwell and disabled children throughout the country.

Caudwell is the charity's largest benefactor and provides all management and administrative costs. He is also chair of the board of trustees, which includes a number of famous faces including Joan Collins, Elizabeth Hurley, Rod Stewart, Penny Lancaster, Bruce Forsyth and Robbie Williams.

He will be presented with the award this Wednesday (26 January, 2011) at Symphony Hall, Birmingham.
