Northampton rail station plans submitted
Network Rail has submitted plans to Northampton Borough Council for a major redevelopment of Northampton railway station. The plans include a new station building, multi-storey car park and a footbridge.
Later phases of the scheme, which will be subject to a separate planning application, include 215,278 sq ft of commercial development on land surrounding the station.
West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC) said the redevelopment and the associated commercial development would support the creation of more than 800 new jobs.
Northampton’s station is already at capacity during peak hours, and the site requires future investment into the station building and its facilities, according to research by the rail network.
WNDC says it is “exploring funding options” for the delivery of the station from both the public and private sector.
Chris Garden, WNDC’s director of regeneration, said: “The station development is required to improve capacity and facilities while providing a more inspiring gateway to Northampton. As part of a wider regeneration plan, it will sustain the growth of a key local economy in the centre of England.
"Although it is a complex and long-term project, we’re making strong progress and are pleased to have commenced the formal planning process.”
