Northampton-based Norbert Dentressangle has been awarded a five-year contract to take on the Co-operative Group’s transportation operations at its new composite distribution centre (CDC) in Andover.

The Co-operative Group announced plans for the new 500,000 sq ft distribution centre in September 2009 as part of the development of its logistics network, following its acquisition of the Somerfield supermarket chain.

Norbert Dentressangle will employ in the region of 350 drivers and operate a fleet of 110 tractor units, 200 trailers and 61 rigids across all temperature bands. In addition to the secondary distribution operation, the company will also provide a night service, trunking frozen produce from Andover to other Co-operative Food distribution centres.

Mark Leonard, the Co-operative Group’s regional head of logistics, said: “We are pleased to have concluded a deal with Norbert Dentressangle to undertake the transport operation, on our behalf, at our new distribution centre at Andover, and we look forward to working with them when the site becomes operational.”

Due for completion in March, the Andover site will employ 900 people when fully operational and will serve more than 400 Co-operative food stores in the south of England.
