Online job vacancies up a fifth in the Midlands
The Midlands has experienced the biggest leap in the number of job opportunities becoming available throughout the UK, according to research from job site Monster. Employment openings advertised online rose by 22 per cent in 2010, twice the UK average of 11 per cent.
The 'Monster Employment Index' (MEI) suggested the Midlands experienced a 1 per cent rise in opportunities available month-on-month.
Despite a sudden 6.2 per cent decrease in opportunities available month-on-month in November, the region experienced a small rise of 1 per cent between November and December.
Isabelle Ratinaud, a Monster UK spokeswoman, said: “2010 has seen the Midlands grow from strength to strength with online job opportunities increasing by 22 per cent year-on-year. This increase in available positions displays a confidence in the region, as the economic climate shows encouraging signs of recovery.”
Across the UK, year-on-year growth occurred in a number of sectors, led by transport, post and logistics. However, public sector, defence and community trades had “the most significant yearly decline”, said Monster. Hospitality and tourism vacancies also fell, which the online recruiter attributed to the harsh weather conditions experienced in November and December.
