Law firm Weightmans, which has offices in Birmingham and Leicester, has confirmed it is in merger talks with North West rival Mace and Jones. In a statement, the firm said it hoped to agree terms shortly.

Weightmans confirmed it is also in talks with London and Kent firm Vizards Wyeth.

Patrick Gaul, managing partner of Weightmans, said: “We confirm that we are currently in talks with the partners of Mace and Jones and Vizards Wyeth. There is no formal agreement in place at this stage but we are optimistic that we can come to terms within a reasonable time frame.

“We have spent some time already looking at the strategy and the vision and we are at a stage now where we are investigating whether a mutually acceptable deal can be put together and we would anticipate being able to make a further announcement shortly.”

In November 2010, Weightmans said it was on target to reach a record £60m turnover after exceeding its half yearly billing target. The firm posted £56.2m annual fee income for the 2009/10 financial year.
