Training is Gateway to employment boost

A Birmingham-based social enterprise is offering a series of free courses aimed at increasing self-esteem and getting people back into the workplace. Gateway Family Services said it will “make an impact in the region” by preparing people for the world of work and placing them in jobs and apprenticeships.

In 2010, the organisation trained 103 people across the West Midlands in the City & Guilds accredited Employability and Personal Development course.

From 11 January 2011, Gateway Family Services, in partnership with Northfield Working Neighbourhood Fund, will run further courses across the Northfield constituency. The first is in Kings Norton, with other courses commencing throughout January in Longbridge and Weoley Castle. Each course runs for two days a week over seven weeks at local community venues.

Vicki Fitzgerald, chief executive of Gateway Family Services, said: “This course is not to be compared to other employability courses people may have attended before. Courses are interactive, fun and prepare individuals for the ‘real’ world of work. You will develop essential work ethic skills, make new friends, build self-confidence and walk away with a nationally recognised qualification. Candidates will also be supported into jobs, further training or voluntary positions by Gateway’s outreach team.”
