Workplace injury toll hits 2,500 in West Mids
Employers in the West Midlands are being urged to consider health and safety regulations as it has been revealed almost 2,500 workplace injuries were incurred in the region last year. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is warning employers to be vigilant after new figures show that five employees in the West Midlands were killed at work in 2009/10.
According to figures released for 2009/10, five people in the area were fatally injured at work, an increase of two, while 1,097 received serious workplace injuries, down 128 from the previous year.
There were 2,464 serious workplace injuries recorded across the West Midlands region last year compared to 2,658 in 2008/09 and nine deaths – three fewer than the previous year.
Rosi Edwards, regional director for HSE in the West Midlands, said: "Employers have a legal duty to protect their workers and I would encourage them to make it their New Year’s resolution to ensure they continue to do all they can. Putting in place simple, straightforward health and safety measures can save lives. It is not good for companies or their workers if they are off through an injury or ill-health."
